The residence site of Shimai Soshitsu (1539-1615), one of the "Three Great Hakata Merchants" alongside Kamiya Sotan and Oga Sokyu. A sake brewer, financier, and tea master who grew wealthy from Ming China and Joseon trade, Soshitsu survived the Honnoji Incident of June 2, 1582 by escaping—he had been a guest at Oda Nobunaga's tea gathering and was staying overnight at the temple.
