A Jodo Shinshu Honganji-branch temple founded in 1529 as a hermitage by Shichiri Hayato (Shoku) and formally established in 1540. Its fifth head priest Shokai fought for the Honganji side in the Ishiyama Hongan-ji War (1570-1580) smuggling weapons in pilgrim-chests from Hakata to Osaka against Oda Nobunaga; for this service the Mori clan granted the "omodaka" crest still used today.
