In 1586 (Tenshō 14), Toyotomi Hideyoshi prayed at Taga Taisha for the recovery of his ailing mother Ōmandokoro and dedicated 10,000 koku of rice. When his prayer was answered and his mother recovered, a grateful Hideyoshi donated the 'Jumyō-ishi' (Longevity Stone) and supported the construction of the inner study and garden. Still preserved in the precincts, this stone testifies to Hideyoshi's filial devotion, and the Okushoin Garden survives as a Nationally Designated Place of Scenic Beauty preserving Momoyama-period design.
