Taga Shrine is dedicated to Izanagi-no-Mikoto and Izanami-no-Mikoto, the divine couple who gave birth to the Japanese archipelago. The head shrine is Taga Taisha in Shiga Prefecture, affectionately known as “O-Taga-san.” These creator deities are revered for blessings of matchmaking, longevity, safe childbirth, and — uniquely — severing harmful ties.

The legend of Toyotomi Hideyoshi transformed Taga Taisha into a nationally famous longevity shrine. When Hideyoshi’s mother fell ill, he vowed to donate “10,000 koku of rice for each day of her life extended.” After her recovery, he fulfilled the vow with a golden torii gate and vast rice donations.

Yes. The myth of Izanagi and Izanami’s separation at the underworld is the origin of this belief. Taga Taisha’s “severing” blessing is interpreted positively — cutting away illness, harmful habits, and toxic relationships to create space for positive connections.

Does Hideyoshi’s golden torii still exist?

The original golden torii from Hideyoshi’s offering no longer survives, but the legend lives on and forms the foundation of Taga Taisha’s identity as the “Longevity Shrine.” Current shrine structures date primarily from the Edo period.
