概要
Osaka Tenmangu (est. 949) enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, the learning deity. The Tenjin Matsuri on July 24-25 — one of Japan's Three Great Festivals — features a grand river procession. The shrine traces its origin to Michizane's stop here en route to exile. Plum blossoms peak in February.
由緒
Founded in 949 after seven miraculous pines appeared at the spot where Sugawara no Michizane stopped in 901 on his way to exile in Dazaifu. Beloved as 'Tenma no Tenjin-san,' its Tenjin Festival is one of Japan's three greatest festivals, drawing 1.3 million visitors annually.

Tenjin Matsuri
One of Japan's three great festivals, the annual festival of Osaka Tenmangu Shrine. On July 24, a land procession parades around the shrine; on July 25, over 100 boats cross the Okawa River in the river procession. Fireworks add to the summer spectacle.

In 901, on his way to exile in Dazaifu, Michizane stopped to pray at the Daishogun shrine on this site. In 949, after his death, seven pine trees miraculously grew overnight and emitted divine light, leading to the establishment of a shrine by imperial decree. Since then, it has been beloved by Osaka citizens as 'Tenma no Tenjin-san.'
