In 1633, the third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu rebuilt essentially all of Kiyomizudera's major structures, including the main hall and the famous stage. This large-scale construction at the shogunate's prestige demonstrated Tokugawa authority, and the Kiyomizudera we see today is largely the work of Iemitsu. By protecting and restoring a famous ancient site in the old capital, the warrior government demonstrated the legitimacy of its rule.
