Post-Jōkyū Relations Between Court and Shogunate
Following the Jōkyū War of 1221, Hōjō Masako and Yoshitoki systematically institutionalized shogunal control over the imperial court. The retired Emperor Go-Toba was exiled to Oki, two other retired emperors were banished, and Emperor Juntoku was deposed. The Rokuhara Tandai was established in Kyoto to monitor the court. The shogunate gained effective influence over imperial succession. This transformation fundamentally altered Japan's power structure, establishing the framework for 700 years of warrior governance.
