In 1561, during the Fourth Battle of Kawanakajima, Uesugi Kenshin led a fierce assault directly into Takeda Shingen's headquarters. Takeda Nobushige (known as Tenkyu), Shingen's deputy commander and brother, was killed in this fighting. Grieving, Shingen founded Tenkyu-ji Temple to console his brother's spirit — a temple that still recalls the ferocity of Kenshin's attack.

Deeply grieved by his brother's death while serving as deputy commander, Shingen built this temple to mourn the fallen; memorial tablets for Takeda soldiers remain enshrined there today.
