In the fourth Battle of Kawanakajima (1561), Uesugi Kenshin made Saijoyama his headquarters. From its summit he could survey the Chikuma River and the Kawanakajima plain, facing Takeda Shingen's base at Kaizu Castle. Sensing Shingen's "woodpecker" tactic meant to flush him off the mountain, Kenshin descended at dawn and struck directly at Shingen's headquarters, igniting a fierce battle.
