Kido Takayoshi (Katsura Kogoro) studied at the Shoka Sonjuku under Yoshida Shoin, a fellow native of Hagi. Inheriting Shoin's spirit of sincerity, he rose from a sonno-joi activist to a central figure of the Meiji Restoration. After the Restoration he worked to abolish the domains and establish the new government's foundations, earning his place as one of the Three Greats of the Meiji Restoration.
