Tokoji was founded in 1691 by Mori Yoshitaka, the third Choshu lord, as an Obaku Zen temple. It holds the tombs of odd-numbered Mori lords and preserves a rare group of Chinese-style Obaku-sect buildings, all designated Important Cultural Properties. Some 500 stone lanterns line the tomb precinct.
