Odawara Castle: Hojo Stronghold and Surviving Sogamae Defenses

Odawara Castle was the seat of the Hojo Five Generations for a century. At its peak it was Japan's largest fortified city, with a 9-km defensive perimeter (Sogamae). After the 1590 fall to Hideyoshi, it became a Tokaido-station town. Today the rebuilt keep and surviving Sogamae traces preserve this history.

Siege of Odawara 1590: Final Battle for Unification of Japan

In 1590, Toyotomi Hideyoshi besieged Odawara with 220,000 troops, ending the Hojo era and effectively concluding the Sengoku period. Three months of siege, the tragic fall of Hachioji Castle, the suicides of Hojo Ujimasa, and Tokugawa Ieyasu's transfer to Kanto reshaped Japan.

1495

北条早雲の小田原城奪取

1495年、伊勢宗瑞（北条早雲）が相模国小田原（現在の神奈川県小田原市）の大森氏を滅ぼして小田原城を奪取した事件。早雲は「鹿狩り」を口実に大勢の供を連れて城下に入り込み、夜陰に乗じて火牛の計を用いて大森氏の守備を崩したとされる。小田原城を拠点に相模一国を支配した早雲は、戦国大名の原型として後世に高く評価される。素浪人から戦国大名に成り上がったという早雲の生涯（実際には今川氏との関係が深い官僚出身）は「下克上」の象徴として語られてきた。後北条氏百年の繁栄の礎となった歴史的事件。

小田原征伐

1590年（天正18年）、豊臣秀吉が関東の雄・北条氏政・氏直父子の小田原城（現在の神奈川県小田原市）を包囲し、降伏させた軍事作戦。秀吉は20万以上の大軍で小田原城を囲み、支城を次々と落としながら長期包囲戦を展開。100日余りの籠城の末に北条氏は降伏し、戦国大名としての北条氏は滅亡した。この征伐により豊臣政権の全国統一がほぼ完成した。家康は小田原征伐に貢献した功績として旧北条氏の関東8か国に転封され、江戸を本拠地とすることになった。この江戸入府が後の江戸幕府開創への第一歩となった。

Siege of Odawara Castle (1590)

From March to August 1590, Toyotomi Hideyoshi besieged Odawara Castle with an army of 220,000, surrounding the Hōjō clan's stronghold. Hideyoshi constructed "Ishigakiyama Ichiya Castle" (a one-night stone castle) on a hill overlooking Odawara as psychological pressure. After more than 100 days of siege, the Hōjō submitted; Ujimasa and Ujiteru were ordered to commit seppuku. Hideyoshi's national unification was complete, and the Kantō region was transferred to Tokugawa Ieyasu.
