In 1590, Hideyoshi besieged Odawara Castle with a massive army of over 200,000 troops. Matsuhara Shrine — the guardian shrine of the castle town, long revered by successive Hojo lords — stood at the heart of this historic campaign. When Hojo Ujinao surrendered that summer, the Hojo clan fell and Hideyoshi's unification of Japan was complete.
