Houdenji, founded by a senior Later Hōjō retainer, stood in Odawara when Toyotomi Hideyoshi's 1590 siege destroyed the Hōjō clan. In the temple's graveyard stand rows of gorintō (five-ring stone towers) said to mark the graves of Hōjō warriors killed in that battle, quietly preserving the memory of the Sengoku era's end.
