Masako died in 1225 at age 69 and was buried in a yagura cave tomb behind Jufukuji, the temple she herself founded. Her son Sanetomo's tomb stands beside hers — the final resting place of a woman who rose from a provincial warrior's daughter to the 'Nun Shogun.'

After his assassination at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu in 1219, the third Shogun Sanetomo was buried at Jufukuji, the temple his mother Masako founded. His tomb stands quietly beside his mother's, the poet-shogun at rest.

Jufuku-ji was founded by Masako to pray for the soul of her husband Yoritomo, with the Zen monk Eisai as its founding priest. After Yoritomo's death, Masako continued to hold real power in the shogunate as the "Nun Shogun," and was eventually buried in a hillside cave tomb behind this temple. The site preserves the bond between two figures who built the Kamakura shogunate together.
