Jufukuji Segaki Service
The Segaki service at Jufukuji, the family temple of Minamoto no Yoritomo and founded by Hojo Masako, ranked third among the Five Mountains of Kamakura. Solemn Obon Segaki rites are held at this renowned Rinzai temple, keeping alive the Kamakura history connected to Hojo Masako and Sanetomo.

Assassination of Minamoto no Sanetomo
On January 27, 1219, Minamoto no Sanetomo was assassinated by his nephew Kugyō (son of Minamoto no Yoriie) at the steps of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu after a ceremony celebrating his appointment as Minister of the Right. Kugyō was immediately killed by Hōjō retainers. Sanetomo, 28 years old, was also an accomplished waka poet. His death extinguished the Minamoto shogunal bloodline, prompting the Hōjō to appoint Fujiwara and imperial princes as figureheads, consolidating Hōjō regency power.
