由緒
Founded in 1225 by Hojo Masako with the eminent Vinaya monk Gangyo as founding priest. Masako died later that year at age 69 and her funeral was held here. Named after her posthumous Buddhist name. Third on the Bando 33 Kannon Pilgrimage.

Hōjō Yoshitoki Becomes Shikken
In 1205, Hōjō Yoshitoki succeeded his father Tokimasa as the second regent (shikken) of the Kamakura shogunate, following the Maki Affair in which Tokimasa was exiled. Under the nominal authority of Shogun Sanetomo, Yoshitoki consolidated Hōjō power by eliminating rival Gokenin leaders. His greatest achievement was defeating the Jōkyū War (1221) against the retired Emperor Go-Toba, establishing shogunal supremacy over the imperial court. Yoshitoki's regency defined the golden age of the Kamakura shogunate.

承久の乱
1221年5月、後鳥羽上皇が北条義時追討の院宣を発して起こした討幕の乱。朝廷方は畿内・西国の武士を集めたが、鎌倉の北条政子が御家人たちに頼朝の恩を説いて結束を呼びかけ、幕府軍は総勢十九万ともいわれる大軍で京都へ進撃した。朝廷軍は美濃の宇治川・木曽川などの防衛線を突破され、わずか一ヶ月で京都が陥落。後鳥羽上皇は隠岐へ、順徳上皇は佐渡へ配流され、仲恭天皇は廃位された。この乱の後、幕府は京都に六波羅探題を設置し朝廷を監視下に置いた。武家政権が朝廷を完全に支配下に置いた日本史の一大転換点。
