Along the approach to Koyasan Okunoin lies the Toyotomi family memorial ground, where a memorial stupa quietly honors Toyotomi Hidenaga — the Dainagon and younger brother who underpinned Hideyoshi's unification of Japan. Hidenaga died of illness at Yamato-Koriyama in 1591 and his grave was built at the Dainagon-zuka there, but a clan memorial was also raised on Mount Koya, the sacred heart of Shingon Buddhism. The trusted deputy whom the daimyo relied upon — 'for private matters, see Hidenaga' — receives eternal memorial here near Kukai's mausoleum, together with his brother Hideyoshi and other Toyotomi kin.

Toyotomi Hidetsugu — the kampaku who committed seppuku at Seigan-ji on Mount Koya in 1595 — is also memorialized at this Toyotomi family ground in Okunoin. Condemned together with his family on charges of treason, his tragedy was long told alongside the slander of the 'murderous kampaku,' but he is increasingly reassessed as a victim of the succession crisis within Hideyoshi's regime. Near Kukai's mausoleum, Hidetsugu rests quietly among his Toyotomi kin.
