Danjo Garan is the original monastic complex founded by Kobo Daishi Kukai as the seat of Shingon esoteric Buddhism on Mt. Koya. Centered on the vermilion Konpon Daito pagoda, 48.5 meters tall, housing a three-dimensional mandala, it forms the spiritual heart of Koyasan alongside Okunoin and is a World Heritage component.

In 816 CE, Kobo Daishi Kukai received imperial sanction from Emperor Saga and began constructing Danjo Garan as the central monastic complex of Shingon esoteric Buddhism on Mt. Koya. In the medieval period the Danjo Garan complex repeatedly burned down in wars and was rebuilt. In the early modern era it received the patronage of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, whose support—together with that of the Tokugawa shogunate—helped maintain and restore the halls of this foundational training site established by Kobo Daishi Kukai, preserving them to the present day.
