Overview
Danjo Garan is the original monastic complex founded by Kobo Daishi Kukai as the seat of Shingon esoteric Buddhism on Mt. Koya. Centered on the vermilion Konpon Daito pagoda, 48.5 meters tall, housing a three-dimensional mandala, it forms the spiritual heart of Koyasan alongside Okunoin and is a World Heritage component.
Origins
In 816 CE, Kobo Daishi Kukai received imperial sanction from Emperor Saga and began constructing Danjo Garan as the central monastic complex of Shingon esoteric Buddhism on Mt. Koya.
