1219

Assassination of Minamoto no Sanetomo

On January 27, 1219, Minamoto no Sanetomo was assassinated by his nephew Kugyō (son of Minamoto no Yoriie) at the steps of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu after a ceremony celebrating his appointment as Minister of the Right. Kugyō was immediately killed by Hōjō retainers. Sanetomo, 28 years old, was also an accomplished waka poet. His death extinguished the Minamoto shogunal bloodline, prompting the Hōjō to appoint Fujiwara and imperial princes as figureheads, consolidating Hōjō regency power.

Jufukuji was built on the site of Yoritomo's father Yoshitomo's residence. Yoritomo himself wished to build a temple here, and after his death, Masako fulfilled that wish. As the third-ranked of the Five Great Zen Temples, it carries the Minamoto legacy.

Yoshitoki supported Jufukuji, founded by his sister Masako, as a Hojo family temple. The graves of Masako and Sanetomo in the hillside behind the temple made it a place of remembrance for him.

Visiting Information

Hours

The approach from the outer gate to the inner gate, and the hillside cemetery behind it, are open to visitors at any time with no fixed hours. The precinct beyond the inner gate is not open to the general public.

Admission

The approach from the main gate to the inner gate is freely accessible (donation-based). The main hall and other buildings are normally closed to the public (special openings around New Year and early May). The graves (traditionally attributed to Minamoto no Sanetomo and Hōjō Masako) in the adjacent cemetery can be visited.
