A Rinzai Daitokuji-branch temple founded in 1240 by Tanne at Yokodake in Dazaifu. Rebuilt in 1600 by Kuroda Nagamasa on the current Chiyo site after the 1586 Iwaya Castle fire, it served as the Kuroda family funerary temple for the entire Fukuoka domain. Sofukuji was founded in 1240 by the monk Tankai (Tanne) at Yokotake near Dazaifu, and in 1241 Zen master Enni Ben'en conducted the formal inauguration ceremony. Rebuilt in 1600 by Kuroda Nagamasa on the current Chiyo site after the 1586 Iwaya Castle fire, it served as the Kuroda family funerary temple for the entire Fukuoka domain.
