A Rinzai Myoshinji-branch temple said to have been founded in Hakata in 1246 by Rankei Doryu (Daikaku Zenji), the founding abbot of Kamakura Kenchoji. Originally located near Yagura-mon Gate in Gionmachi, it was destroyed in the 1586 Shimazu-Otomo warfare and rebuilt in 1636 within the Shofukuji precinct as a subsidiary temple.
