Japan's first esoteric Buddhist temple, founded in 806 by Kukai (Kobo Daishi) upon his return from Tang-dynasty China. Notable features include a 10.8-meter wooden seated Buddha (one of Japan's largest), a five-story pagoda, and an underground tunnel representing the path from Hell to Paradise.
