Adachi Morinaga (1135–1200), one of the 'Thirteen Lords' (Kamakura-dono no Jusan-nin) who governed after Yoritomo's death, was the shogun's earliest and most intimate retainer — serving him for nearly twenty years from the years of exile on Izu Hirugashima. This Amazuna residence was Morinaga's base in Hase, and the Azuma Kagami records Yoritomo's frequent personal visits here. The episode of January 2, 1186 — Yoritomo calling at Morinaga's residence after worshipping at Amazuna Shrine through the snow with Hojo Masako — is remembered as a vivid illustration of the extraordinary trust and closeness between the two men. Morinaga continued to support the shogunate after Yoritomo's death as a member of the council of thirteen, dying at age sixty-six in 1200, as if following his lord into the afterlife.
