Uesugi Shrine stands on the site of Yonezawa Castle's main enclosure. In the Keisho-den, the shrine's attached treasury, the original helmet bearing Kanetsugu's famous "ai" (love) crest survives. The helmet is widely recognized as the defining material symbol of Kanetsugu, and since the 2009 NHK Taiga drama Tenchijin renewed national interest in his story, the Keisho-den has drawn a steady stream of visitors wishing to see the original object in person.

To counter Masamune after the Battle of Suriagehara, Hideyoshi assigned Uesugi Kagekatsu a 1.2-million koku domain in Aizu. The Date and Uesugi remained tense rivals throughout the Tohoku frontier.

Uesugi Jinja enshrines Uesugi Kenshin, the lifelong rival of Takeda Shingen. Vying for control of Shinano, the two warlords clashed five times at Kawanakajima between 1553 and 1564. The fourth battle in 1561 in particular became legendary, said to include a fierce single combat between Shingen and Kenshin themselves — one of the most famous confrontations of the Sengoku period.
