Overview
The Uesugi Family Mausoleum, a National Historic Site, contains the tombs of 12 generations of Uesugi lords of Yonezawa. Centered on Uesugi Kenshin's mausoleum, the dignified complex of white-plastered tomb halls lies among 400-year-old cedar trees.
Origins
Uesugi Kenshin died in 1578 at Kasugayama Castle in Echigo Province at the age of 49. His remains, sealed in lacquer within his armor, were enshrined at Kasugayama Castle before being moved to Aizu-Wakamatsu in 1598 when his successor Kagekatsu was transferred to Aizu domain, and then relocated agai…
