Terukuni Jinja is Kagoshima City's largest shrine, enshrining Shimazu Nariakira, the enlightened Satsuma lord who founded Japan's modern industrial base. Nariakira (d. 1858) was enshrined here by imperial decree in 1863. A key site on Satsuma heritage tours, it was cherished by Saigo Takamori, Nariakira's protege. 5 min from Tenmonkan-dori.
