Cemetery where 2,023 Satsuma Army soldiers killed in the 1877 Seinan War are buried, with Saigo Takamori's grave at center. Located on a Kagoshima hillside with views of Sakurajima. Key figures including Kirino Toshiaki rest alongside Saigo. The Nanshu Shrine within the grounds enshrines Saigo as a deity. A memorial service draws many visitors every September 24, the anniversary of his death.

Saigo Takamori (1828-1877), the great Meiji Restoration hero, endured two island exiles totaling six years. After his lord Shimazu Nariakira's death and a failed double-suicide with the monk Gessho, he was secretly exiled to Amami Oshima (1859-62), where he married Aikana, then to Okinoerabu Island (1862-64) where he was confined in an open-air cell.

Okubo Toshimichi agonized over ordering the suppression of the Satsuma Rebellion (1877), in which his childhood friend Saigo Takamori led the Satsuma army against the government. The following year on May 14, 1878, Okubo himself was assassinated at Kioizaka. The tragic relationship between these two men who grew up together, joined forces to achieve the Meiji Restoration, and then became adversaries, is still told at Nanshu Cemetery today.
