甲突川河畔の加治屋町に生まれた大久保は、同じ町内の西郷隆盛と幼馴染として育った。共に島津斉彬に見出され、明治維新を成し遂げたが、征韓論で袂を分かち、西南戦争で敵味方に分かれた。近代国家建設に生涯を捧げ、紀尾井坂で暗殺された大久保の功績をこの銅像が伝える。

大久保と同じ加治屋町で育った幼馴染。二人は共に維新を成し遂げたが、維新後の国の在り方をめぐり対立。西南戦争では敵味方に分かれ、日本近代史の最も悲しい物語となった。

Okubo Toshimichi was born and raised as the son of a lower-ranking samurai in Kajiyacho, Kagoshima. As a childhood friend of Saigo Takamori, he joined Saigo in pushing for Satsuma domain reform, and as one of the Three Great Heroes of the Meiji Restoration, he drove the abolition of domains, land tax reform, and industrial development. On May 14, 1878, at the age of forty-seven, he was assassinated at Kioizaka by samurai harboring grievances from the Korea debate. This statue stands in the city where he devoted his life to building the foundations of modern Japan.
