Kūkai

In 921, Emperor Daigo bestowed a posthumous title upon Kukai (Kobo Daishi) and dedicated imperial robes to him. Thereafter, Hoki-in was charged with the special role of managing Kukai's robes, and during the annual Okoromo-gae rite in March, newly-prepared robes are dedicated at Kukai's mausoleum at Okuno-in. This is a central ritual of the "Kobo Daishi nyujo (eternal meditation) faith" that holds Kukai still lives in deep meditation, saving all sentient beings; the temple draws veneration as an important bearer of Kukai devotion on Mount Koya.
