Kamo Taketsunumi no Mikoto, the deity of Shimogamo Shrine, is identified with Yatagarasu — the three-legged crow said to have guided Emperor Jinmu on his eastern expedition. Tamayori-hime no Mikoto is regarded in some traditions as Jinmu's mother, deeply linking the shrine to the imperial line. Long before the capital moved to Heian-kyo, the shrine was revered as guardian of the imperial seat, and the Aoi Matsuri has continued as an imperial festival with imperial envoys in attendance.
