This temple stands on the former site of Furuwatari Castle, the stronghold of Oda Nobunaga's father, Nobuhide. In 1546, at age 13, Nobunaga held his coming-of-age ceremony (genpuku) here, marking the start of his career as a warlord. The Higashi Honganji sect later received the land and built this temple, so the grounds are also known as the site of Nobunaga's genpuku.
