In 1552, when Nobunaga's father Nobuhide's funeral was held at Bansho-ji, the young Nobunaga arrived in disheveled clothing and tossed incense at the memorial tablet. This infamous act of apparent disrespect — the behavior of what people called a 'fool' — is one of the most famous Nobunaga episodes, set at this very temple.
