Overview
Head temple of the Tendai Jimon sect. Famous for 'Mii no Bansho' (Evening Bell of Mii), one of the Eight Views of Omi. The vast temple grounds overlooking Lake Biwa contain over 100 halls and structures. Founded in 672, the temple has a dramatic history of repeated destruction and rebuilding through conflicts with Enryakuji on Mount Hiei, earning it the nickname 'the phoenix temple'.
