Bishamondo is a Tendai-sect monzeki temple tracing its origins to Izumoji, founded in 703 by Gyoki, later relocated and revived in its current location in Yamashina by Kokai, a disciple of Tenkai. After Prince Koben, son of Emperor Gonishinomiya, entered the temple, it became a monzeki and is counted among the five Tendai monzeki of Kyoto.
