Overview
Joeiji is a Rinzai Zen temple famed for Sesshu Garden, said to have been designed by the painter-monk Sesshu on commission from the Muromachi daimyo Ouchi Masahiro. The 15th-century stroll garden, resembling a three-dimensional ink painting, is a National Historic Site and Place of Scenic Beauty.

Joeiji is a Rinzai Zen temple traditionally said to have been founded during the Bunmei era (1469–1487) by Ouchi Masahiro, a powerful Muromachi-period daimyo who ruled over the provinces of Suo, Nagato, and beyond.
