概要
Head temple of Jodo-shu (Pure Land). Built where Honen spread his nenbutsu teachings. Its National Treasure main gate is one of the largest in Japan.

In 1175, Honen Bo Genku descended from Mt. Hiei and built a hermitage at Yoshimizu in Higashiyama, where he preached exclusive reliance on the nenbutsu — the founding act of the temple.
