Overview
Abeno Shrine was founded in 1882 as one of fifteen shrines honoring loyalists of the Kenmu Restoration. Dedicated to Kitabatake Akiie, who fell in battle against the Ashikaga forces while supporting Emperor Godaigo's Southern Court, it is a memorial to his celebrated loyalty. A striking equestrian statue of Akiie stands in the grounds.
Origins
Founded in 1882 to honor the loyalty of Kitabatake Akiie and Chikafusa as one of the fifteen Kenmu Restoration shrines. Akiie was killed in battle against Ashikaga forces at Abeno in the third year of Engen. Listed as a betsukaku kanpeisha (special-rank imperial shrine).
