Sumiyoshi Matsuri
The annual festival of Sumiyoshi Taisha, also called "Oharai." A mikoshi procession travels from the shrine to the temporary shrine, and the mikoshi is purified in Osaka Bay during the "mikoshi-arai" ritual. It marks the end of summer in Osaka.

Minamoto no Yoritomo
First Shogun of Kamakura
Minamoto no Yoritomo, founder of the Kamakura shogunate, revered Sumiyoshi Taisha, donating shrine lands and supporting building repairs. As he established samurai rule across Japan, he honored the Sumiyoshi deities — guardians of seafarers and patrons of waka poetry — setting a precedent for the veneration shown by the Hojo and Ashikaga clans that followed.
