Origins
Said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku at the same time as Shitennoji in the reign of Empress Suiko. Long served as the guardian shrine of the rear demon gate of Shitennoji. Became an independent shrine following the Meiji-era separation of Buddhism and Shinto.
