Hakone Shrine, founded in 757 by the priest Mangan, is the chief shrine of eastern Japan and a 1,200-year center of mountain worship. Famous for the red “Peace Torii” rising from Lake Ashi (built 1952), it has been venerated by Yoritomo (sheltered here after his 1180 defeat at Ishibashi-yama), Hojo Soun, and Tokugawa Ieyasu. Yoritomo institutionalized the New Year pilgrimage to Izusan Shrine and Hakone Shrine, continued by his sons.
