Guardian shrine of the Kanto region, situated on the shores of Lake Ashi. Deeply revered by Minamoto no Yoritomo, it attracted the faith of the warrior class.
Origins
Founded in 757 by the monk Mankan Shonin on Mt. Hakone. Revered by many warriors beginning with Minamoto no Yoritomo, it was widely worshipped as the guardian shrine of the Kanto region.

Hakone Jinja New Year Visit
New Year visit to Hakone Jinja on the shores of Lake Ashi. This prestigious shrine protected by Hakone's sacred mountains draws many visitors through winter scenery. The torii gate rising from the lake and snow-covered precincts create a picture-perfect New Year scene.

Shrine grounds accessible any time. Amulet/goshuin counter 8:15–17:00, prayer reception 8:30–16:00. Treasure hall 9:00–16:30 (last entry 16:00).
Admission
Free to enter grounds. Treasure hall: adults (junior high+) ¥500, children (elementary) ¥300.
