Matsuo Basho established his thatched hut (Basho-an) in Fukagawa in 1680 and frequently visited temples in the Fukagawa-Honjo area before departing on his Oku no Hosomichi journey in 1689. The 'Basho-o Yukizuka' monument at Yoshinji preserves this connection, and the harmony between Basho's poetic sensibility and the Zen temple's tranquility has long been cherished by literati.

Tokugawa Ieyasu founded Daitokuin in 1594 by inviting the Koyasan scholar-monk Shinkai, valuing his connection to Mt. Koya. Ieyasu deeply revered Koyasan Shingon Buddhism, and its influence is evident even at Kunosan Toshogu, his own mausoleum. The inclusion of 'Toku' in the temple name is seen as a mark of the special relationship between the Tokugawa clan and Koyasan Shingon.
