Yofukuji was a grand temple founded by Minamoto no Yoritomo to memorialize the dead of the Oshu campaign, featuring a two-storied main hall known as the Nikaido. Nikaido Yukimasa, who served as executive of the Mandokoro, built his residence near Yofukuji and took the name Nikaido, becoming the founder of the Nikaido family. The Kamakura place name Nikaido also derives from this hall. The ruins of Yofukuji preserve the origin of Yukimasa's family name.
