Egara Tenjin Nagoshi no Oharae
The Nagoshi purification rite at Egara Tenjin, Kamakura's oldest Tenmangu shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane. Students and devotees walk through the chinowa grass ring to purify themselves, with prayers for academic success at this shrine said to be the origin of ema votive tablets.

Founded in 1104 after a divine image of Tenjin reportedly descended from the sky, it stands as evidence that veneration of Michizane — who died in exile at Dazaifu in 903 — had taken root in Kamakura two centuries after his death.
