Wakayama Castle was the seat of the Kishu Tokugawa clan, originally built by Toyotomi Hidenaga. Known as the birthplace of eighth shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune, the white tower atop Mt. Torafushi is beloved as the symbol of Wakayama City.
Origins
Wakayama Castle traces its origins to 1585, when Hashiba Hidenaga, younger brother of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, constructed a fortress on Mt. Torafushi during Hideyoshi's pacification of the Kii Province. Born in 1684 in the castle town of Wakayama as the fourth son of Tokugawa Mitsusada, the second lord of the Kishu domain, Tokugawa Yoshimune became the fifth lord at age 22. In 1716 he ascended to become the eighth shogun and carried out the Kyoho Reforms to restore shogunate finances, earning fame as the 'Rice Shogun.' Wakayama Castle remains a source of civic pride as the birthplace of Yoshimune.
