Overview
The temple where Kennyo temporarily based the Honganji after withdrawing from Ishiyama Honganji in 1580. Under the protection of the Saika-shu, it became the center of Ikko-shu power in Kishu. Officially called Honganji Saginomori Betsuin, it remains the center of Jodo Shinshu proselytizing in Kishu today.

In 1580, Kennyo, the 11th head of the Honganji, withdrew from Ishiyama Honganji following prolonged conflict with Oda Nobunaga and established his base at Saginomori in Kii Province (present-day Wakayama City). In 1580, Kennyo made Saginomori Hongan-ji (this temple's predecessor) his base after leaving Ishiyama Hongan-ji. After moves to Kaizuka and Tenma, Toyotomi Hideyoshi granted land in Kyoto in 1591 — now the site of Nishi Hongan-ji — ending Saginomori's role as headquarters, though the temple itself continued afterward as a branch temple.

In 1580, after a decade-long conflict with Oda Nobunaga known as the Ishiyama Hongan-ji War, Kennyo, the 11th head priest of Hongan-ji, left Ishiyama Hongan-ji and moved his headquarters here to Saginomori under the protection of the Saiga warrior monks, marking the first place he settled after his long struggle with Nobunaga ended.
