Kishu Toshogu was founded in 1621 by Tokugawa Yorinobu, first lord of Kishu, to enshrine his father Ieyasu. Called the Nikko of the West, its gorgeous Momoyama-style buildings with Kano-school paintings and carvings attributed to Hidari Jingoro are all Important Cultural Properties. The 108-step Samurai Slope leads to sweeping views of Wakaura.
Kishu Toshogu was founded in 1621 (Genna 7) by Tokugawa Yorinobu, the first lord of the Kishu domain and tenth son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, to enshrine his late father as a deity.
