Wakaura Tenmangu was founded after Sugawara no Michizane stopped at Wakaura on his exile to Dazaifu in 901. One of the Three Great Tenjin Shrines with Kitano and Dazaifu, its main hall was rebuilt in 1606 by Asano Yoshinaga as a Momoyama masterpiece and is an Important Cultural Property. The site overlooks the beautiful Wakaura coast celebrated in the Manyoshu.

According to tradition, Wakaura Tenmangu was founded in 901 (Engi 1) after the scholar-statesman Sugawara no Michizane stopped at Wakaura on his way into exile in Dazaifu and admired the beauty of the coast.
