Overview

The mausoleum of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who died at age 63 in 1598; his remains were buried at the summit of Amidagamine and the mausoleum was rebuilt in 1897. Hideyoshi wished in his will to be buried on an Higashiyama peak, and his tomb was deified as "Shin-Hachiman." In August 1598, Toyotomi Hideyoshi died at Fushimi Castle at the age of 63. In accordance with his will, his remains were interred at the summit of Amidagamine in the Higashiyama hills, and a mausoleum was established there the same year. Toyotomi Hideyoshi

Age 61 at founding

Died August 18, 1598, at Fushimi Castle, age 63. Possible causes: (1) colon cancer (records of severe diarrhea and declining health), (2) beriberi, (3) uremia. His final years were marked by erratic judgment—the purge of nephew Hidetsugu and two Korean invasions. Until his last moments, he repeatedly entrusted his son Hideyori to the Five Elders. His body was buried atop Mt. Amidagamine and deified as "Toyokuni Daimyojin."
